01 / UNDERSTAND THE FORMATS

Ghillie suits, hoods, ponchos and helmet scrims

A camouflage pattern provides colour and print; a three-dimensional system adds texture and changes the garment's outline. Choose a format by the coverage you need, the clothing underneath and the equipment it must accommodate.

01 — FULL-BODY SYSTEM

Ghillie suit

A coordinated jacket-and-trouser system, sometimes supplied with head coverage and accessories. Compare sizing, ventilation, packability and access to the clothing worn underneath.

02 — UPPER-BODY SYSTEM

Ghillie hood & camouflage poncho

Hoods and ponchos offer different amounts of head, shoulder and torso coverage. Their fit should be checked over the intended uniform, helmet and load-bearing equipment.

03 — HELMET ACCESSORY

Helmet scrim vs. helmet cover

A helmet cover is a fitted fabric layer. A scrim is an additional mesh, cut-textile or foliage layer. Check attachment points, helmet geometry and clearance around rails, hearing protection and mounts.

04 — MODULAR TEXTURE

3D camouflage foliage

Textile leaves, strands and other modular elements vary in shape, colour and attachment method. Compare their weight, durability and maintenance before choosing a complete system or individual components.

03 / MATERIALS & TEXTURES

Different types of camouflage foliage

“Leaf camouflage”, “3D foliage” and “ghillie fibres” describe different constructions. The material and attachment system matter as much as the printed pattern.

Broadleaf & fern-style textile shapes

Cut or printed textile elements create leaf-shaped texture. Compare single- or double-sided printing, textile strength and how the leaves are attached. The Leaf Ghillie Poncho in our catalogue uses printed artificial leaves.

Grass-style fibres & strands

Synthetic strands and traditional jute-style fibres provide a different texture from shaped leaves. Weight, water uptake, drying, shedding and cleaning depend on the actual material; consult its specifications.

Mesh & cut-textile scrims

A mesh or cut-textile layer can be used as a separate accessory or as a support for other elements. Check stretch, edge finish, fixing method and compatibility with the intended garment or helmet.

Attachment points for natural materials

Some systems include loops or cord rows for additional materials. Confirm that feature on the specific model, along with the care instructions and any restrictions on attachments.

Pattern families: woodland and mixed vegetation; dry grass and earth tones; snow and alpine overwhites. Match your purchasing specification to the intended environment and season. A woodland product does not automatically come in desert or winter variants. Snow camouflage overgarments do not, by themselves, provide insulation against the cold.

04 / FIT & FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

Compare coverage standing, kneeling and prone

For sniper teams, observers and training users, evaluate garment fit with the actual uniform and equipment. These are ergonomic checks for selecting equipment; coverage changes with the cut, size and posture.

Position Fit and coverage to check Equipment considerations
Standing Hem length, shoulder movement and coverage over clothing. Access to pockets, harnesses, closures and equipment underneath.
Kneeling / seated Room around the hips and knees, and how the garment drapes when flexed. Fabric bunching, knee-pad clearance and access to carried equipment.
Prone Comfort at the elbows, chest and knees; hood position when looking forward. Bulky fasteners, pressure points, lens clearance and unrestricted adjustment.
Changing position Freedom to reach, bend and stand without pulling the garment out of place. Loose elements catching on straps, buckles, zips or other attachments.

05 / BUILD YOUR SPECIFICATION

What to compare before ordering

  • Coverage: full suit, hood, poncho, helmet accessory or separate foliage.
  • Fit: wearer sizes, uniform layers, helmet model and equipment clearance.
  • Construction: mesh, fabric, fibres, leaves and attachment methods.
  • Practical details: packed dimensions, weight, ventilation, cleaning and repair.
  • Delivery: quantities, approved substitutes and required delivery window.

Visible camouflage, NIR and thermal performance

These are separate specifications. A 3D texture or camouflage print describes appearance in visible light; it does not establish near-infrared reflectance or thermal performance.

If your procurement requires NIR/IRR, flame resistance or any other tested property, request documentation for the exact material, colour and product configuration.

GOVERNMENT / MILITARY / LAW ENFORCEMENT

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Camouflage equipment FAQ

What is the difference between a ghillie suit and a leaf poncho?

A full ghillie suit normally separates upper- and lower-body garments. A leaf poncho uses a loose over-garment with shaped textile foliage. Compare the actual coverage, included pieces and dimensions of each model.

Is the Recon SF helmet cover a helmet scrim?

No. The Recon SF listing is a fabric helmet cover. A dedicated scrim is an additional texture layer with its own attachment system and compatibility requirements.

Can I wear a ghillie over a plate carrier or winter clothing?

That depends on the garment's cut and dimensions and on the equipment underneath. Check the specific model and allow for layering when providing your sizes; compatibility should be confirmed before a unit order.

Does a ghillie provide thermal or near-infrared camouflage?

The visible appearance of a ghillie does not prove thermal or NIR/IRR performance. Request the relevant technical data for the exact model if that requirement is part of your specification.

Can Fair D Canada supply military or police camouflage orders?

Use the institutional quote form for quantities, delivery requirements and documentation. Product availability, lead times, minimum quantities and any NSN or origin information are confirmed for the requested items.

Where can I find helmet scrims and loose camouflage foliage?

Send us the material, pattern, quantity and attachment requirements through the quote form. Dedicated scrims, hoods and loose foliage components will be added to this selection as sourcing and product listings are confirmed.
